Hello,

My name is Michael Peck and I am a Senior at IUPUI working towards a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology with a Minor in Data Science. I am on track to graduate in May of 2024.

During my time at IUPUI through my research and service experiences I developed a passion for substance use prevention and treatment. I plan to continue my education focusing on substance use from a public health perspective. Long term I hope through research on substance use and substance use engagement and I can make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by substance abuse.

A little more about me

I Am Statement: A reflection of my identity and values as an academic, professional, and person.

Curiosity has always been a driving force in my life. My passion for learning and discovering the unknown, especially in areas that align with my interests has always been a core part of my identity. This innate curiosity has driven me throughout my undergraduate experience to seek out opportunities that allowed me to learn and grow through real-world experience. These experiences have allowed me to explore my areas of interest while developing grit and perseverance which have allowed me to thrive academically and professionally.

From researching risk behaviors as an intern in the Hulvershorn lab to mentoring the next generation as an honors mentor, I have gained real world skills and experiences that have prepared me for my next steps. More importantly, my experiences have taught me about myself and have ignited a passion for research, mentorship, and giving back to my community while keeping my love of learning and drive to explore going strong.

What I have done

Where I'm headed

I Want to Become Statement: A short reflection of my personal goals and how I would like to grow as a person, student, and professional.

Looking towards the future I see many versions of myself I aspire to become, a constellation of skills, traits, and experiences that embody the life I want to lead. Of these many goals and ideals there are four main principles I want to personify: to explore, to educate, to innovate, and to give back.

My drive to learn has always been a strong component of my identity. More recently I have developed a passion for applying this drive in a research setting through my experience in research internships. I plan to go to graduate school to continue developing this passion and to explore and discover within my field. The passion I have for learning has also developed into an interest in educating others. Tutoring and serving as a mentor to my peers during my undergraduate career has opened my eyes to the joy that passing knowledge on brings to my life. I hope to continue serving in instructional and leadership roles to continue passing knowledge on and to educate the next generation.

Another aspiration of mine has been to leave my mark on the world, creating good and improving the lives of others. One way I hope to do this is through research, producing findings that can improve our understanding of substance use disorder and help those who have been affected by addiction. Through innovative and relevant research, I hope to make a large scale impact on the lives of others.
